Sutherland Shire students were given the chance to work with international composer Paul Rissman to help reinvent the orchestral work of Sergei Prokofiev, Romeo and Juliet.
Mr Rissmann is a music educator who has worked with the London Symphony Orchestra and New York Philharmonic.
A total of 24 public school musicians and 12 dance students were invited to the artistic workshop that deconstructed the Russian ballet score and collaborated to compose 20-25 minutes of music.
They were joined by the dance students who choreographed a routine to the new score.
Kirrawee, Caringbah, Cronulla, Engadine and St George Girls high schools were involved in the workshop.
Students performed the final pieces on May 12 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
