A seven months’ road upgrade project has started at the intersection of Princes Highway and Port Hacking Road, Sylvania, next to Southgate shopping centre.
Motorists should be prepared for delays as a result of temporary traffic changes, including lanes closures.
The highway will be widened to allow the extension of the third through lane for traffic heading towards Sutherland.
On the other side of the highway, an indented bus stop bay will be built near Florida Street to provide more lane capacity for motorists travelling towards Tom Ugly’s Bridge.
Crews will also install a pedestrian crossing at Madeira Street, resurface the road, relocate directional signs as well as paint new road markings and install new signs.
Miranda MP Eleni Petinos said work crews would be on site for about 95 night and 45 day shifts up to December 20.
Day work would take place between 6am and 5pm on weekdays and 8am and 1pm on Saturdays.
Night work hours would be 7pm to 5am, Sunday to Friday.
“Work may be noisy at times but all measures will be taken to minimise impact to residents, including completing the noisier tasks by midnight,” Ms Petinos said.
“Temporary traffic changes will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists including lanes closures.
“I thank the community for their patience while this essential improvement work is carried out.”
Ms Petinos said the project was being delivered as part of the state government’s $100 million Congestion and Safety and $300 million Gateway to the South Pinch Point programs.
“The intersection is one of the busiest in southern Sydney, with about 6500 vehicles using it in the morning and afternoon peaks," she said.
