Council CCTV cameras in Cronulla mall have revealed just how close mayor Carmelo Pesce came to being killed on a pedestrian crossing.
Footage of the incident, which occurred about 11.30pm on Saturday, shows a white ute flashing by while several people are on the crossing.
Cr Pesce and his wife Niki had just left Sting Bar and were heading to the mall to get a taxi.
He appears unaware of the ute, which had done a U-turn at Croydon Road, 100 metres away, and was heading back towards the beach.
Niki Pesce hears the screech of the vehicle and hears screams from others on the crossing and grabs his left shoulder and pulls him back.
Despite her quick thinking, the vehicle still hit Cr Pesce’s knee and ran over his foot.
He hobbled back to the footpath and is seen sitting on the ground while waiting to receive attention.
7 News reported the driver of the ute was a former policeman who was now a tradesman.
Police said in a statement it was alleged the driver, a 35-year-old man, returned a positive result to a roadside breath test and was taken to Sutherland Police station where he returned an alleged breath analysis of 0.162.
He was granted bail and is due to appear at Sutherland Local Court on June 21.
