No fancy camera equipment, just a regular iPhone 7.
That is all Narelle Nash needed to snag third prize in this year’s International Mobile Film Festival, held in San Diego.
The first-time filmmaker from Caringbah wrote and directed The Actor, a short six-minute film about the challenges of being an actor in a competitive and sometimes brutal industry.
The comedy was shot in one day, in one location at a friend’s house, and the cast included Ms Nash’s friends.
It was selected from more than 100 films from across the world to screen at Sydney’s Smart Fone Flick Festival, and premiered at the Blood Moon Theatre in Kings Cross last year.
The filmmaker has dabbled in some acting, featuring in Puberty Blues, which was shot at Cronulla.
“It’s about the trials and tribulations of being a working actor,” Ms Nash said.
“Smart phones are a great way for people who may not have access to fancy and expensive equipment but who have a good idea for a film, to get it made.
“There are prestigious international film festivals now offering categories and prizes exclusively for films shot on smart phones.”
In June the film will screen at the Toronto Smartphone Film Festival, and has been nominated for ‘best comedy’ at the Global Mobile Film Awards, held in December.
