Jack Brubaker has scored one of the biggest wins of his career, earning a unanimous decision over Englishman Tyrone Nurse in his Commonwealth Welterweight Title eliminator.
The Cronulla fighter, backed by a strong home crowd at The Star on Thursday night, saw the 12-round bout go the distance.
There was some controversy surrounding the result, with a number of boxing fans taking to social media to voice their displeasure at the score cards, feeling the vastly experienced Nurse had done enough to win the fight.
But Brubaker was awarded the victory by all three judges who scored the bout 115-113, 116-112 and 116-112 to the 26-year-old from the shire.
The fight was the headline bout on the Johnny Lewis Boxing Series card.
Brubaker told the Leader in the lead up he hoped a victory would open a number of doors for him in the UK.
“There’s more world champs in the UK than the US right now. They’ve got some great boxing programs and who knows, after this fight and this win I’ll have a bit of a name, if I can do a training camp at a facility over there and get my name out there,” he said.
After this fight and this win I’ll have a bit of a name... that would be the ideal outcome.

“That would be the ideal outcome, to get recognised by one of the big boxing promotions that do the big fights over there.”
Yorkshireman Nurse, who had a record of 35-3-2 entering the fight with Brubaker, lost his British Super Lightweight title to Jack Catterall in Leeds in his previous bout.
With a win over the well liked and respected Nurse, Brubaker improves his own professional record to 14-2-1.
Rockdale’s Tim Tszyu continued his unblemished professional record on the undercard, moving to 9-0 with a fourth round technical knock out victory over Larry Siwu.
Tszyu told the Leader earlier this month he was eyeing a fight with former three-time world champion Anthony Mundine by the end of the year.
The 23-year-old son of Australian boxing legend Kostya Tszyu issued his public challenge to Mundine but also has his sights set on becoming Australia’s No.1 super-welterweight and a world ranking inside the top 15.
