Twelve stumps on the edge of Taren Point Road, Caringbah, are the result of a program to remove large trees under power lines and plant replacements.
Eight trees on the eastern side of Taren Point Road, in front of Nick Scali Furniture, and four on the western side were cut down during the week.
A motorist, who contacted the Leader, thought the work was associated with this month’s announcement that Taren Point Road will be widened to provide an additional right turn lane into The Boulevarde, adjoining Endeavour Sports High School.
However, inquiries revealed the trees were removed under a program announced in May by Sutherland Shire Council and electricity network operator Ausgrid.
Under the program, to be conducted in May and June, trees with poor structure or health under power lines in seven major streets in the shire, will be removed.
“To compensate for the removal of the trees, we are undertaking a planting program with suitable species during September and October,” a council statement said.
“The tree species and locations have been carefully selected, and formative pruning will occur to ensure that ongoing maintenance by Ausgrid will not be required.
“This planting will play an important role in helping to maintain our natural environment.”
The other streets where tree will be removed are:
- Waratah Street, Sutherland.
- The Boulevarde, Kirrawee.
- Garnet Road, Kirrawee.
- Bellingara Road, Miranda.
- Kareena Road, Caringbah.
- Port Hacking Road, Sylvania.
A spokeswoman for Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) said the time frame for the duplication of the right-turn lane from Taren Point Road into The Boulevarde had not been determined.
