Southern Districts face one of their toughest assignments of the season so far on Saturday when they will try to be the club to end Northern Suburbs’ unbeaten start to the campaign.
The Rebels host Norths at Forshaw Rugby Park looking to bounce back from a heavy 40-12 loss to Shute Shield leaders Sydney University last weekend.
Norths by contrast will arrive in the shire full of confidence on the back of a 97-14 thrashing of Gordon. They remain second on the table despite being the only undefeated team left in the competition.
Tries to Ben Chalmers and Denny Godinet were not enough for Souths as the Students ran out 28-point winners at Sydney University Football Ground to maintain their place at the top of the table.
Souths turn their attention to Norths who eliminated the Rebels on the way to last year’s grand final.
The Shoremen finished fifth last season but downed Souths 47-18 to dump the second-placed Rebels out of the competition in the first week of the finals after other results went against Souths.
The pair have played out high-scoring affairs in recent times, with Souths downing Norths 37-33 in round 14 last year to get revenge for their 46-37 defeat in round three.
The club will also hold their annual Ladies Day on Saturday which will feature guest speaker Leah Barthel.
The day will also feature a fashion parade, food and wine sampling, tarot card readings and live music.
Kick-off in first grade is at 3pm.
Women’s Sevens
Southern Districts took out round three of the Sydney Women’s Rugby Sevens tournament at Sylvania on Sunday.
The Rebels headed into the weekend in second place behind Randwick but wins over HAC and Gordon saw them advance to the final against the Galloping Greens.
Souths, who hadn’t conceded a point leading into the decider, downed Randwick 17-0 in the final to take the tournament which featured a number of Sydney clubs including Norths, Manly, Sydney Uni and Eastern Suburbs.
Super Rugby
Southern Districts junior Jed Holloway came on just before the hour mark for NSW against the Chiefs in Waikato but could not stop the Waratahs from going down 39-27 in an entertaining contest.
NSW will take on the Reds in Queensland on Saturday night, still top of the Australian conference.
