The well-known name C V Holland disappeared from Rockdale in 1986.
The motor dealership was housed in a very distinctive building on the corner of Princes Highway and Hegerty Street.
The site is now occupied by an apartment block with shops, including Subway, at the bottom.
C V (Clarrie) Holland opened the business in 1935 after the success of his first motor dealership at Kogarah.
The dealership name became synonymous with Holden as the popularity of Australia’s national car skyrocketed.
However, in July, 1986, the name C V Holland was replaced by Boyded Holden.
It was “the end of an era”, the Leader reported.
“The change was ushered in with ‘all the fun of the fair’ – merry-go-rounds, ferris wheel, a children’s bouncing castle and a free sausage sizzle,” the report said.
General manager Bill Perkins said only the name had changed.
“For many years C V Holland has been part of a large group of companies (Rossfield), which also includes car dealers Fair Deal Car Sales, Boyded Lakemba and Randwick and Mitchell Cox Holden,” he said.
“From July, 1986, these five will all use the Boyded name.”
C V (Clarrie) Holland started work as an apprentice fitter and turner before joining Hunt Bros, who were Ford dealers, at Kogarah, where he became workshop foreman.
He opened his own business in West Kogarah in 1927, becoming a Chevrolet dealer, and in 1935 expanded to Rockdale.
He died in 1966.
