Cancer Council NSW will make up to 30 regional jobs redundant across the state, telling staff of revenue challenges caused by a drop in the amount of money pledged through bequests in the past year.
An email seen by the Mercury reveals more details about the charity's fundraising troubles and its plans to get rid of community engagement management positions across its six regional offices.
"As you may be aware, we have experienced some significant revenue challenges this year, particularly in bequests, while at the same time substantially increasing the amount we spent on mission activities," the charity's Community Engagement Director Rory Alcock said.
"We have been required to make some difficult decisions to reduce the number of roles across the organisation and make some changes to structure to ensure the long-term sustainability of our organisation."
The Mercury understands at least seven roles in the Wollongong office will be directly affected.
However, staff have been told that eight new roles across the state will be created as the charity centralises its leadership, operations and communications.
All senior manager, regional manager and community engagement manager roles will be impacted. Likewise, communications and events coordinator roles will be cut from six to one.
The cancer prevention agency will also axe its Eat It To Beat It nutritional program, making several nutrition staff redundant.
The program is run in 20 Illawarra schools, helping parents to encourage healthy eating to address the statistic that one in three cancers can be prevented be a healthy lifestyle.
We have been required to make some difficult decisions to reduce the number of roles across the organisation.

The Cancer Council’s Aboriginal programs will also be affected by the organisational changes, with a dedicated project officer leaving the business and the programs worked in to other roles.
Mr Alcock also flagged other changes within the charity, saying there were “broader changes happening across other divisions to varying degrees and that we need to be mindful of the impact to other teams during this period”.
Staff were briefed on the changes on Thursday mornings and have been told the cuts will come into affect on July 2.
