Cronulla businessman Andrew Macpherson and his AMAC Motorsport team are hoping to continue their successful start to the Blancpain GT Series Asia.
Team owner Macpherson and driving partner Ben Porter race a Lamborghini Huracan as the first all Australian team to enter one of the most competitive GT sportscar championships in the world.
The six-round 2018 championship visits four countries and some of Asia’s most iconic circuits.
The GT3 category is a global formula that sees some of the world’s top manufacturers including Ferrari, Porsche and Aston Martin go head to head.
The popularity of the GT racing sees drivers from Formula 1 and V8 Supercars to high level amateur drivers mixed into the series with all teams in the Blancpain GT Series Asia required to field a two driver line up.
Macpherson and Porter have previously raced together in the Australian GT championship and Bathurst 12 hours.
AMAC Motorsport enjoyed success in the opening round at Malaysia’s F1 track Sepang in mid April where the team managed to achieve two class podium results.
The second round, held at the Chang International Circuit in Thailand in mid May, saw more success with a class podium in race one. But misfortune was to strike the team with tyre failure and contact from a lapped car causing damage that forced the team to retire three minutes from the end of race two.
With four rounds left to run at Japan’s Suzuka and Fuji then China’s Shanghai and Ningbo, the AMAC team are hoping for more success.
The formula for GT cars is to create parity across the grid, regulating cars by allowing freedoms and restrictions to different manufacturers such as weight and engine restrictions.
The goal is for all cars to achieve the same lap time but in different ways. This means the cars all have strengths and weaknesses encouraging constant passing unlike many other categories of motorsport.
