Rockdale City’s impressive resurgence continued with a 2-0 win over Sydney United 58 on Saturday night.
The win was the Suns’ fourth in their last five games, enough for them to climb to fifth place on the NPL 1 table, level on points with United.
It was the second time Rockdale had beaten United in as many weeks, with the Suns eliminating United to advance to the FFA Cup national round of 32.
Brayden Sorge gave Rockdale the perfect start at Edensor Park when he scored in the opening seconds of the match before an Alec Urosevski goal at the start of the second half sealed the result.
Rockdale have improved their defence dramatically. After a dreadful start to the season at the back that saw them briefly concede the most goals in the division, the Suns have been breached just three times in their last five league matches.
“We did have to weather a bit of a storm in the first half after we got the early goal,” Suns player-coach Paul Reid said.
“We did change it slightly in the second half and we were then much more comfortable.
“Our defence was outstanding. We were desperate and we blocked everything and it was a great team effort in defence for us.
“The three points from tonight are massive because we knew that they were three points ahead of us. We have been in some decent form recently and we wanted to continue that momentum but we still have a long way to go to get to the levels where we want to be.”
Rockdale host struggling Bonnyrigg at the Ilinden Sports Centre in round 15 on Sunday.
Kick-off is at 5pm.
