A brave new world came to Hurstville last week as Georges River Council started installing its smart street furniture in Memorial Square.
Old street furniture has been removed on the southern side of Memorial Square as the council started to install the smart street furniture and Healthy Living Hardware on Monday, June 4.
The smart furniture will include rubbish bins with fire and fill sensors that are networked to a central motoring point.
There will be PowerMe tables that allow for General Purpose Output, USB and wireless charging and inbuilt power monitoring, park tables with charging feature and ash cylinders with a temperature sensors.
The Healthy Living Hardware is also being installed at Olds Park and includes WIFI, GPO, USB and power charging.
The units will allow people to recharge their phones, wash their hands or make a cup of tea. They also include a timed tap with grate for drainage and side tables for preparation.
To accompany these unique pieces of street furniture Council will be installing more traditional items to help activate these spaces.
The smart furniture and Healthy Living Hardware are part of the $658,000 Smart Cities Project, an 18-month initiative by the University of NSW’s Built Environment Team which will use the furniture to look at how responsive technologies can be implemented in public spaces in the Georges River local government area.
