Georges River Council has launched a competition to name the new Hurstville central plaza which is due to be completed later this year.
The plaza is currently being built on the the site where the Bag-a-Bargain shop stood at 296 Forest Road which Hurstville Council acquired more than eight years ago.
It will provide a new public space for the community and a link between the Forest Road entrance to Hurstville Station and Westfield and Club Central.
With a construction budget of $1,180,000, the plaza will include shaded seating and outdoor dining areas, a water feature, and soft landscaping at Forest Road, new public amenities and pavement lighting.
Stairs will lead from Crofts Avenue into the plaza and a screen element to conceal the existing ramp from Westfield.
A 14-storey commercial building at 282 Forest Road adjoining the plaza was approved with a ground floor retail area which will open onto the plaza.
The plaza has been described as providing a new and vibrant meeting place, which will promote wellbeing and celebrate the community’s diverse cultural heritage.
The winning entry in the naming competition will have their nominated name given to Hurstville Central Plaza and will receive a $250 Westfield voucher.
There are two entry forms: one for 12 to 17-year-olds, and another for 18 years and over.
The competition closes on Monday, July 9 at 12 noon.
