A free support group for young parents is having great success in Sutherland Shire, less than a month since it began.
Sutherland Shire Family Services launched ‘Baby & Me’ in May, targeted for mothers under the age of 24.
The six-week program hosted by Engadine District Youth Services (EDYS) aims to boost confidence in raising children and create strong mother-child connections.
A total of 14 parents including fathers signed up to the new initiative, and the group also welcomed two pregnant women.
EDYS manager, Kim Byron, says it has been a positive start.
“I have so much admiration at the resilience and optimism of this group,” she said.
“Despite their young age, they have very mature attitudes to their parenting practices and a collective desire to do what is best for their child and their family.
“We feel honored and privileged that we can provide a welcoming and supportive space for these young parents at this time of their lives.
“We can give them opportunity to connect with others and encourage that ongoing support network, nurture them, and provide practical strategies that they can take home with them.”
Participants who ‘graduate’ from the program will be treated to a mini-makeover at Dalliance Hair Studio and Urban Spa.
Sutherland Shire Family Services hopes to host another group.
