The outdoor utility pool at Sutherland Leisure Centre will be closed for four months while an upgrade costing nearly $700,000 upgrade is carried out.
“This is a renewal of the utility pool with works to include a pool strip out and new tiling, as well as new starting blocks,” a council spokeswoman said.
“Works will be conducted by contractor Metz and will take place between June and October, 2018, with the start date to be confirmed.
“Water polo, the key user of this pool, will train at other facilities while Aqua classes will be available in other council pools at Sutherland, Caringbah and Engadine Leisure Centres.
“Other groups and casual swimmers will be able to utilise other Sutherland Leisure Centre pools during the utility pool closure period.”
The council agreed to accept a tender from Metz Project Services for $692,980.
The funds will come from the Leisure Centre Capital Reserve, which is set aside for works proper, project management, contingencies and latent condition investigations if needed.
The council will investigate grant funding opportunities from the state and federal governments.
Meanwhile, work is progressing on the new $1.5 million water fun park in the north western corner of Sutherland Leisure Centre.
The facility is due to open for summer.
The council says the water park will be “a dynamic mix of slides and fountains to suit a range of ages and abilities”.
Access will be included in the leisure centre’s standard entry fee with a discounted family rate of $25.50.
