Heart disease is a leading killer of women, taking the lives of almost three times as many women as breast cancer does.
This is also a cause close to Lisa Flynn’s heart.
Flynn, from Cronulla, has suffered from heart issues since her early twenties and who lost two family members at young ages to the same heart related affliction.
Twenty-two Australian women die from heart disease every day. Most Australian women have had a breast check, however few have had a heart check which can be arranged by a simple visit to their GP.
Flynn hosted a fundraising event at Zimzala Restaurant on June 19 for the Heart Foundation's Women's Heart Health initiative.
Kelly Landry a presenter from “Getaway” was the guest speaker, herself a congenital sufferer of Heart Disease and Laura McKay of Highland Property Agents was the MC- Heart disease is really the unknown to most people.
The event, Women with Heart and Soul High Tea was in support of the Women’s Heart Health Initiative. All funds raised going to the Heart Foundation thanks to the incredible support of friends, businesses and the local community.
Flynn has been involved with the Heart Foundation for the past year and said she was very proud to host this event, a culmination of four months hard work, selling tickets, chasing donations, raffle prizes and silent auction items.
“I am incredibly passionate about this initiative for a number of reasons,” she said.
“I have a family history of heart related conditions, having lost two family members at young ages to the same undiagnosed condition.
“My 55-year-old uncle passed away tragically at a family reunion in 2012 which has had a devastating effect on my family.
“I am vigilant with identifying and acknowledging any irregularities with my heart or unusual symptoms which can often be non specific in women.”
