Re the article “Tunnels to cost billions: road and rail funding for the south” (Leader, June 13).
Good news that a start will be made on the F6 extension, at least “on paper” even if doesn’t directly affect us. Or does it?
The first stage is slated to be finished in 2024 that is, to President Avenue, Kogarah.
I cant help thinking the government is starting at the wrong end.
Wouldn’t it be better to start at this opposite end? That is the section through the Sutherland Shire to unload the traffic jams which are clearly happening NOW.
The proposed first stage will surely get more traffic through to our already congested main roads.
Added to this are the extra cars brought into our shire by all the high-rise development. The idea of doing infrastructure first still goes to the bottom of the list.

It was interesting to see the smiling photos in last week’s Leader of local Liberal state government members with the Premier supporting the F6 toll road.
Liberal State member for Miranda, Eleni Petinos has previously opposed the F6 toll road which she knows will act as a permanent scar throughout the heart of the Sutherland Shire (her electorate) for the benefit of Wollongong commuters.
By the way, these tolls are going up 4 per cent year on year, unlike our wages.
But where is Ms Petinos now?
She needs to come out and oppose the toll road on behalf of her constituents.
Or is she sacrificing both her principles and the voters in her Miranda electorate by keeping quiet on the issue just to keep her Premier happy?
What do you say Ms Petinos?
Sharyn Joseph, Gymea
Happy to use the F6 and pay a toll if need be. My time is worth far more than $5 per trip.
People complain about being stuck in traffic but also complain about a potential solution, you can’t have it both ways.

I have this great idea - politics aside - maybe we could establish major regional cities and Sydney could stop growing towards London size - perhaps look at QLD.
Lloyd Gainey
About time but don’t let it be two lanes each way with no breakdown lane. I’ll be glad to use it if it saves fuel, time and safety for all I’ll be using it.
Rodney Heseltine
$2.6 billion in cost to save yourself 15 minutes in traffic. Have I misunderstood because that seems like a load of money to spend for such a small change in travel time.

"Saves using 23 sets of lights".
Which possible way could you go to go through 23 sets of lights?

The best place to buy is next to a planned motorway – because you buy at half the price with a park land as your backyard and then you complain 30 years later and the government ends up building a tunnel and your house quadruples in value.
Win - win situation.
Spiro Geha
Excellent news and way overdue.
Matthew Chisholm
Great! But needs to be 3 lanes both ways not 2.

We pay enough taxes and don’t need tolls on roads, this is a scam for the greedy capitalism nothing more.
Petrol taxes, rego, Green Slips, Income taxes, GST and now road tolls.
