Sutherland Shire Netball Association was more colourful than usual on Saturday as they held their annual Crazy Hair and Socks Day.
Players, umpires, coaches and supporters got into the spirit to raise awareness and money for childhood cancer research.
The event raised more than $50,000 last year, with all proceeds going to the Kids’ Cancer Project, the official charity partner of Netball NSW.
Gold coin donations were collected at Sutherland’s Bellingara and Seymour Shaw courts throughout the day.
The project is an independent national charity that supports childhood cancer research. Since opening 25 years ago, the charity has committed more than $36 million to research projects to find better treatments and ultimately a cure for many different types of cancer.
Kids’ Cancer Project founder Col Reynolds OAM was delighted with the initiative.
“We’ve come so far in 25 years but there’s still so much to do,” he said.
“And none of it is possible without the support of the community and generous partners like Netball NSW and NSW Swifts.
“Many people aren’t aware that the causes of childhood cancer are unknown, that there is no prevention and that research is the only way to improve treatments and survival.”
NSW Swifts general manager Nikki Horton said the netball community was right behind the cause.
“Our partnership with the Kids’ Cancer Project is important to the NSW Swifts,” she said.
“We are committed to making 2018 bigger and better. Our netball community is engaged, inclusive and supportive so I have no doubt that together we will make it happen.”
