Simulated hospital wards will be set up in a training hub for enrolled nurses and aged care workers at St George TAFE.
This was revealed after the state budget provided $2.68 million towards “campus consolidation”.
The total cost of the project is estimated to be $4.1 million.
A spokeswoman for Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the changes would provide an “aged care precinct” on the main campus of the college, at the corner of Princes Highway and President Avenue, Kogarah.
Welding studies would be moved to the TAFE college at Ultimo to facilitate the changes, she said.
Another government official said the project would enable the introduction of the Certificate IV in Aging Support and the Certificate IV in Health Administration, and enable growth in delivery of the Diploma of Enrolled Nursing.
“To meet industry demand, TAFE NSW is refurbishing St George campus building C to co-locate Nursing and Community Services,” he said.
“There are synergies between the two programs especially in aged care training.
“This will see the introduction of a newly refurbished simulated nursing unit which will include two simulated health wards with capacity for six beds each.
“The facility will boast a simulated nurses station, patient simulator and computer on wheels which will enabling prospective enrolled nurses to develop their practical skills and theoretical knowledge in a 'real' health environment.
“While there are existing nursing training facilities, they do not have the state-of-the-art simulated environment and technology that the new project will deliver.”
