After years of talk, work is scheduled to start in the next 12 months on the construction of a multi-storey commuter car park behind the Beverly Hills shopping strip.
The existing 92-space Edgbaston Road car park has been confrmed as the site for the new facility, which is expected to have 400 to 600 spaces.
The state budget provided unquantified funding in the Transport Access Program to start construction following an allocation for planning last year.
Oatley MP Mark Coure, who is also the Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure, said other sites were investigated before the existing car park site was chosen.
Mr Coure said Georges River Council and the federal government had also committed to making a contribution to the project.
“A final cost will be revealed following the conclusion of the planning process,” he said.
Previous estimates of the cost have been about $10 million.
Mr Coure said Transport for NSW would begin community consultation on a concept design for which planning approval was expected before the end of this year.
“Construction is set to commence next year,” he said.
Georges River Council, as did Hurstville Council before the merger, has been pushing for the project and is willing to contribute the $10 million parcel of land to the project.
Last year, Banks MP David Coleman announced a $2.5 million federal government grant to kick-start the project.
Community support for the new car park was shown by a petition with 1000 signatures, collected by businesses in Beverly Hills.
