A six-storey boarding house is proposed for the site of a well-known former drive-through bottle shop at Sutherland.
It is the seventh development application (DA) for a boarding house lodged with Sutherland Shire Council in six months and, like a contentious proposal at Miranda, is on a relatively small block.
The purpose-built drive-through bottle shop operated for about 50 years at the corner of Flora Street and Auburn Street,
It was leased to Porters Liquor in latter years but when the property was sold in 2016 after the area was rezoned for high-rise, the bottle shop was trading as Local Liquor Shire Cellars.
The business was subsequently closed and the property has become an informal parking lot during the day because of the scarcity of spaces in the area.
The DA proposed a six-storey boarding house containing 28 boarding rooms – 20 double and eight single – plus a double room for the caretaker / manager.
“All boarding rooms will have private WCs and kitchens and will share a communal lounge at the uppermost level,” the DA stated.
”Parking is provided at basement level, containing parking for six cars (including one accessible space), eight bicycle spaces and six motor bike spaces.”
The rectangular shaped site is 674.5 square metres, with a frontage to Flora Road of 16.77 metes and a frontage to Auburn Street of 40.24 metres.
The block is marginally larger than a 590.6 square metre property in Urunga Parade, Miranda, where a seven-storey boarding house proposal has outraged local residents.
Sutherland Shire Council is seeking state government approval to make 600 square metres the minimum size block for dual occupancy developments.
