Re “Single-use plastic bags given the flick” (Leader, June 27).
Sorry, I don’t care if Woolies and Coles have decided to go green but to charge customers for bags goes right again st the grain.
If they want to change, fine, but they should still supply bags of some kind.
I and thousands of others spend hard earned money in their stores and the have the hide to say they will not supply anything to put your groceries in unless you pay even more.

You know that Woolies and Coles buy plastic bags from a supplier? And so pass that cost onto you through the prices they charge. You've always paid for plastic bags, they were never free, you just didn't think about it.
Stephen Laws
If they give out those green bags for free, people will just use them like plastic bags and throw them out. The point is to re use them, hence the 99 cent fee.

So many excuses why people can’t take responsibility for their own shopping. Well done the supermarkets, it’s apparent not many people would consider it without enforcement.
Nicole Fergie
If they are getting rid of free plastic bags as an environmental initiative - what sense would it make to the provide free plastic bags to all those who keep forgetting their fabric bags?
Jeanette Munn
Just like Westfield charging for parking for the privilege of spending your money in their centres.
If supermarkets really are serious about the environment they should get rid of plastic packaging on the shelves and supply paper shopping bags like we used to have.
Lorraine Oro
SA shoppers have been doing this for ages. No dramas. Just bring along a set of bags each time you shop. Easy peasy. I’ve had the same Woolies and Coles green bags and cooler bags for ages.
However paper or jute bags are the best really for the environment. That should be the alternative like it was pre-70s.

In the UK they've been charging for single-use plastic bags for a long time. They didn't disappear altogether.
You just had to pay 10c for them if you wanted one. The charge makes people think twice before taking bags they don't need.

Great no plastic bags, but walk through the fruit and veg section. Packaging galore, why do they have to wrap everything up in plastic?
Valerie Knight
Forced to buy stronger plastic bin liners now!
Ray Whiteman
Well done Woolworths! Long overdue.
