Gannons Park has received an injection of $2.8 million of funding for a new amenities building and sporting field improvements.
The project is the result of Georges River Council managing to secure $1.8 million of surplus from the NSW Government’s Stronger Community funds.
The funding is part of a $9.5 million Stronger Communities grant package awarded to Georges River Council by the NSW Government for major capital works projects throughout the local government area.
$800,000 of the Stronger Communities funding will go towards a new amenities building that will include a canteen, gender neutral change rooms, referees’ room, medical room, public amenities, storage and a covered barbeque area.
The remaining $1 million will fund works which include installation of irrigation and drainage infrastructure to irrigate the eight heavily used sporting fields in Upper Gannons Park.
Council will be co-contributing an additional $1 million from its Section 94 Infrastructure Plus and Council funds.
Georges River Council mayoir, Kevin Greene said that the upgrades to Gannons Park are much needed, and will provide enormous benefits to sporting teams and the wider community alike.
“Gannons Park is home to the Forest Rangers Football Club and Lugarno Football Club, who between them have approximately 1,000 registered players,” Councillor Greene said.
“There are eight playing fields within the Gannons Park parkland, which are utilised by teams from football, cricket, touch football, OzTag, other sporting codes and schools.
“We’re determined to meet the needs of an increasing population. With high levels of participation in sports locally, Council is working hard to provide the community with high quality, durable playing fields and associated infrastructure,” Cr Greene said.
Works are scheduled to commence in October, 2018 and will progress in stagesthroughout 2019, to be completed in March 2020.
