A roundabout will be installed at an Illawong intersection where five casualty crashes, three resulting in serious injuries, occurred over five years.
At present, traffic at the intersection of Old Illawarra Road and Blaxland Road is managed by a concrete “seagull” island.
Sutherland Shire Council has secured a federal government grant of $205,000 under the Black Spot Program and has included the project in the 2018-19 works program.
A council report said, between July, 2011, and June, 2016, the Roads and Maritime Services crash database recorded five casualty crashes at the intersection, resulting in 12 casualties.
”Of the five casualty crashes, three resulted in serious injuries, three involved moderate injuries and one involved multiple minor injuries. Included in the serious injury crashes were two instances of vehicle-pedestrian collisions,” the report said.
“A head-on vehicle crash in August 2011 resulted in six casualties, one of which was a serious injury.”
The council also decided no further traffic calming measures should be introduced in a nearby part of Illawong, where a fatal accident occurred last year.
A man, 20, died in April, 2017, when a Toyota Camry, travelling north in Moreton Road, failed to negotiate a left hand turn and rolled.
Following the accident, the council installed curve warning signs and carried out line marking in Moreton Road, Wilbung Road and Osprey Drive.
A report by council staff said a “modest reduction” in traffic speeds had resulted from the measures.
