Hurstville Oval will receive a $2.2 million upgrade including a new building for players and officials, and a new media centre and medical and umpires rooms.
The oval has been recognised by the Sydney Cricket Association as “Ground of the Year” numerous times, as judged by cricket umpires voting for the best among the 21 First Grade grounds in metropolitan Sydney.
Georges River Council mayor, Kevin Greene said the $2.2 million funding will allow the council to continue to implement the Hurstville Oval Improvement Plan.
The funding is part of a $9.5 million package awarded to Georges River Council by the NSW Government for major capital works projects throughout the local government area.
Councillor Greene said that improvements will include the construction of a purpose-built media area.
“Hurstville Oval has been recognised by the Sydney Cricket Association as one of the best grounds in metropolitan Sydney, hosting first class district and State cricket, as well as cycling events,” Cr Greene said.
“Modern facilities, including a state-of-the-art, purpose built media space for broadcasting matches, will provide a hub for local sporting clubs and enhance the venue’s recreational capacity.
“A new building for players and officials will be constructed, plus medical and umpires’ rooms.
“Additionally, gender neutral change rooms and facilities that meet the regulations for multiple codes, such as cricket, league, AFL and soccer, will be built,” he said.
It is expected that upgrade works to Hurstville Oval will commence in early 2019.
Last year Hurstville Oval’s velodrome was resurfaced at a cost of $177,000 returning the historic venue to a first class facility for cyclists.
The velodrome restoration was made possible through grant funding provided to St George Cycling Club and Cycling NSW through the State Government’s Strong Communities Program, along with funds contributed by the council.
