A truck carrying 34-tonnes of hay donated by the Cronulla Lions Club was delivered to the drought-hit farmers of Gunnedah yesterday.
Cronulla Lions jump-started their donation drive last week raising $20,000 in five-minutes.
The $20,000 raised was used to purchase one truckload of feed.
And yesterday the Lions were able to see the results of their efforts as the truck piled high with bales of hay rolled into Gunnedah.
The Cronulla Lions members had been touched the story of a Gunnedah local who told their recent meeting how farmers were doing it tough.
“Tears were running down this chap’s face, how could we not act?” Cronulla Lions president Shaun Cronin said.
“So a call was made to local businesses that we know and within five minutes we managed to get a commitment for $20,000 and within five days a truck has been arranged and will be on its way to Gunnedah by next week,” Mr Cronin said.
“When it costs $20,000 to put one truck’s worth of feed into the worst affected areas, the time to act is now.
“We are working with Gunnedah Lions to manage and arrange with the town on the day when truck arrives, to hand out to the farmers.”
Mr Cronin and his fellow Cronulla Lions members are calling on every community group in Australia to rally to their own cause.
“Pick a town affected, line-up some local contacts, a local Lions Club or other community groups and make it happen,” Mr Cronin said.
