Anyone travelling south this weekend may need to consider their route as roadworks are planned for the M1 Princes Motorway and Picton Road.
The M1 (between Bulli Tops and Memorial Drive) and Picton Road will close at 8pm on Sunday and reopen at 4am on Monday.
Picton Road eastbound will close at 7.30pm.
The twin road closures – to carry out road maintenance – affect traffic in both directions.
“This package of work will involve clearing vegetation, cleaning gutters and drains to improve stormwater runoff, road resurfacing, line marking and maintenance of safety ramps,” a Roads and Maritime Services spokeswoman said.
“This maintenance work is scheduled every three months to improve safety for the thousands of motorists who travel on these roads each day.”
During the closure light vehicles will detour via Bulli Pass and Memorial Drive and Appin Road.
The detours will add between 15 and 40 minutes travel time.
Heavy vehicles can use the same detour, unless they are longer than 19 metres.
If works cannot be carried out due to poor weather, the works will be rescheduled to Sunday, August 26.
There will also be a second closure of both roads on Sunday, August 19.
Sea Cliff Bridge maintenance
In other road infrastructure news, the second stage of essential maintenance work to protect the piers at Sea Cliff Bridge along Lawrence Hargrave Drive will start Monday, August 13.
The NSW Government has provided $3.5 million of funding for work to protect bridge piers and improve slope stability at the northern end of the iconic structure.
Member for Heathcote Lee Evans said large rocks to be used for the work were transported from Albion Park to Coalcliff for stockpiling from May to late July.
“This next stage will involve installing those rocks around the piers at the northern end of Sea Cliff Bridge to protect them from erosion from ocean waves,” Mr Evans said.
“About 9,000 tonnes of rock will be used to build the breakwater-like structure around the piers and work is expected to take about four months to complete, weather permitting.”
There will be short delays to traffic while heavy vehicles access the site between 8am and 4pm on weekdays. Motorists are advised to plan their journey and allow extra travel time, as delays of up to five minutes are expected.
There will be no exit for vehicles from the southern end of Paterson Road between 8am and 4pm on weekdays. All vehicles will need to exit Paterson Road from the northern end during these hours.
Vehicles can still enter Paterson Road at the southern end.
