The upgrading of the Ocean Grove Avenue section of Cronulla mall, where the old pirate ship playground was once located, has been completed.
Sutherland Shire Council carried out the project, which was designed to complement the adjoining Commonwealth Bank redevelopment called Banc.
The works will facilitate a new outdoor dining precinct, with eateries in Banc opening on to the area.
A council statement said the precinct had been “rejuvenated, creating a flexible, contemporary space that caters for the whole community”.
“New paving, including sections of beautiful Australian porphyry stone and 14 mature Livistona Australis Cabbage-tree palms have completely transformed the look of the area,” the council said.
“The new space is ideal for shoppers and diners and is a great place for locals and visitors to the area to meet and enjoy the amenities.
“The design also includes state of the art furniture, CCTV and lighting and is an accessible space for all to enjoy.’
Mayor Carmelo Pesce said the upgrade completed stage one of the masterpan to renew the mall.
“We will continue to work through future stages of the masterplan to deliver further improvements in collaboration with the local businesses and community,” he said.
Funding for further stages of the masterplan has yet to be allocated.
