Re the impassioned letter from Chris Mort (Your View, August 8, page 24).
He has lived in Kyle Bay for over 60 years, it does give him considerable knowledge and awareness of the community. He compares usage of open leisure space across the area and for activities.
I ask myself, to whom is Chris Mort speaking? He connects with me, I have lived in Kogarah for over 40 years and I haven’t seen open space or parkland or sports grounds being opened up.
Back in 2011, councillors Katris and Varvaris supported raising funds for a “new purpose built multi-purpose facility” to develop the Carss Park site. Nothing happened.
I went to the new council’s Community Strategic Plan consultation with residents in mid-2017, and I didn’t hear those present asking for more over-development of the area. In fact, residents asked for open space, greenery, and facilities.
On the whole, the council has ignored us. The New City Plan was not welcomed by the residents, the councillors voted to support the progress to intensive residential over-development in the suburb. Once Georges River Council came into the job, the North Kogarah Precinct Plan was passed, to intensify the over-development of this pocket.
Coming back to the letter from Chris Mort. He is pleading that the council reconsider their decision about Carss Park War Memorial Pool.
Other residents have written, the newspaper has printed their letters, objecting to the loss of the pool. The residents know that their voices of objection at council level are very limited, hence we turn to a public “place” for a pleading voice.
Will our elected councillors please listen to our concerns?
T Scott, Kogarah
