For a coastal school, the topic of ‘the Ocean’ would seem very appropriate for Cronulla High’s third annual art exhibition.
Stephanie Kentwell, the school’s art coordinator said even though it seemed an easy subject there were many angles to the theme and something all students could approach differently.
The Year 7 collaboration installation ‘ocean scape’ filled a whole room with discarded single use plastic bags rafted together.
Reef and sea creature sculptures were all recreated with recovered plastic rubbish, which generated much discussion and demonstrated the students commitment to the ‘war on waste’.
Year 8’s task was similar in that they had to make multi-media sea sculptures – another job that shouldn't have been so easy to source.
They also reconstructed a relief print appropriation of the iconic ‘Wave off Kanagawa’ by Japanese printmaker Hokusai, including a large scale collaboration.
The clay coral display put on by Year 10 was stark and devoid of colour in reference to the 21st century issue of coral bleaching. As the world's oceans warm up, their charcoal still life section was a dramatic reference to the different shapes found in nature.
Year 11 provided large scale floating figures and a wall of watercolour portraits, all demonstrating an incredible array of talent.
Special T print and Eckersleys donated prizes.
