The new synthetic playing surface at Ador Avenue Reserve, Rockdale has had its grand opening over the weekend.
St George Football Association played two days of semi-finals at the ground on Saturday and Sunday, including premier league fixtures, with grand finals to also be played at Ador over the next two weekends.
The association procured a $2 million Federal Government grant in June 2016 to install a synthetic field at the ground before asking Bayside Council to manage the design and construction process, with work starting in January.
The SGFA, football’s governing body in the St George district, plan to use it as a “community asset” for use by their 9,500 players of which 3,300 play for Bayside Council-based clubs.
“Bayside Council has put a lot of work into this project and I am sure it will be a major boost for local sports clubs, our rising sports stars and our community,” Bayside mayor Bill Saravinovski said.
The facility includes a synthetic football pitch, fencing, seating and a raised viewing area.
SGFA general manager Craig Kiely was thrilled that the facility can now be accessed.
“This type of facility is something that SGFA and our member clubs have been lobbying to have delivered for many years and we are excited that it is now come to fruition,” he said.
“We sincerely thank both the Federal Government and Bayside Council for their tremendous support.”
