After 23 years away at the beach, the North Cronulla Sea Lice Rugby team are back and not only did they field a Subbies side in the Meldrum Cup this season they won the competition.
They competed in division Six which is a one-team competition with clubs competing for the Meldrum Cup.
The teams were Burraneer, Chatswood, Collaroy, Dee Why, Dundas Valley, Engadine, North Cronulla and Wakehurst.
The grand final was held at Forshaw Rugby park in front of hundreds of cheering spectators on Saturday, August 18 and was a high spirited, quality game of rugby.
The North Cronulla Sea Lice were victorious in their comeback year 31-12 against Engadine RSL.
The North Cronulla Rugby Club dates back to the 1960’s and later became Port Hacking, who merged with St George in 1989 to form Southern Districts Rugby.
North Cronulla Sea Lice, a side created by members of the North Cronulla Surf Lifesaving Club, broke away from Port Hacking in 1984 and played in several divisions through till 1995.
“The Sharks and Dolphins were already taken by other teams from Cronulla so we decided to go with the Sea Lice,” foundation member Frank Schreuder told the Rugby News recently.
The Sea Lice partnered with Southern Districts ahead of their inaugural season.
The side played and trained on the back field at Forshaw Rugby Park and in May, the Rebels hosted a Lifesaving round, with free entry for all surf club members.
