Armed with a strong message for politicians, a unified crowd of about 500 protesters turned up at a climate change rally on September 8 at Cronulla Park.
Snap Climate Rally: Kick Coal Out of Politics! demanded political action leadership on climate action.
They voiced their concerns for the state of the planet and to call for an end to fossil fuels, and a worldwide transition to renewable energy before 2020.
More than about 6000 people rallied nationally. Globally, more than a quarter of a million people took part in more than 900 actions in 95 countries.
The event was organised by an alliance of Australia’s biggest environment and social justice groups, including Get Up!, Greenpeace, Solar Citizens, Australian Youth Climate Coalition, 350.org, the Climate Action Network, Stop Adani, Tipping Point, and The Nature Conservation Council.
Young Cronulla protester, Aref Taleb, said Australia needed to change its ways.
“Young people in Australia aren’t going to sit around and wait for our leaders,” he said. “We are taking matters into our own hands, by reaching out to our local communities and galvanising the Australian spirit of compassion to build a movement so strong, no amount of ignorance or fossil fuel money can stop us.”
