Joan Quinn touched the lives of many people in Sutherland Shire during her 88 years.
The mother of five, who lived at Como with her husband Brian, was well known in shire sporting circles and also contributed generously to many school, charitable and neighbourhood activities and needs.
Mrs Quinn lost her battle against Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in Calvary Hospital, Kogarah, on September 16.
Her family described her as “a most remarkable woman” who “made such a difference to people’s lives”.
Mrs Quinn loved all sports and was both a talented participant and dedicated coach and administrator, volunteering countless hours of her time for others.
Netball was a special passion, and she was a very successful and highly respected coach for Joeys (St Joseph’s Oyster Bay) A-grade teams.
Many young players, whom she helped mould, went on to representative honours.
Mrs Quinn was known as a tough but fair opponent and for being caring to young players from all teams.
She and her husband Brian, who is also well known in shire sporting circles, nurtured the differing talents of their five children, producing an Australian ambassador, first grade and state players in Australian Rules, NRL and a NSW Sportswoman of the Year runner-up.
Born in Marrickville, Joan Cudmore grew up in Earlwood, where close neighbours and friends were future Prime Minister John Howard and his family.
She married Brian 62 years ago and they made their home in Como.
Mrs Quinn was always ready to step in and help neighbours, friends and extended families in time of need, and was a de-facto mum to many.
A celebration of her 88th birthday showed Mrs Quinn’s standing in the community.
Her family told club caterers they expected about 100 people from the word-of-mouth invitation, but about 250 turned up.
A requiem Mass will be celebrated at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sutherland, on Thursday, September 27, at 10am.
Mrs Quinn is survived by her husband Brian, five children, Martin, Anthony, Chris, Megan and Angela.and their partners, and 13 grandchildren.
