Could this be Australia’s biggest moon cake?
A huge 96-kilogram moon cake made by a Hurstville bakery to celebrate the Moon Festival may have just broken the Australian record for the biggest one ever baked in the nation.
Bakery King on Forest Road created the Chinese delicacy, which was unveiled at Club Central on Monday.
Falling on the 15th day of the 8th month according to the Chinese lunar calendar, the mid-autumn festival is the second grandest festival in China after the Chinese New Year.
The day is also known as the Moon Festival, as at that time of the year the moon is at its roundest and brightest. It is when moon cakes are traditionally eaten.
Its round shape symbolises reunion and during the festival, families and friends gather together to eat them and appreciate the beauty of the moon.
The cake is 80 centimetres wide and 15 centimetres high. The previous record was 73 centimetres wide and 13 centimetres high.
Bakery King owner Michael Cheung is originally from Hong Kong, and has worked in the industry for more than 36 years.
He said the cake took one week to prepare and one hour and 45 minutes to bake.
Ingredients include 85 kilograms of red bean paste, plus another 11 kilograms of sugar, flour and vegetable oil.
“This is the largest moon cake that I have ever made,” he said. “For the Moon Festival each year we usually produce about 1600 moon cakes.”
The large cake was judged and the results were verified by two independent witnesses.
Measurements have been submitted to the Australian Book of Records to officially decide if the moon cake is in fact, Australia’s biggest.
Club Central members also got a share of the big bake, taking home a piece each.
