Two teams will represent St George high up in the sky in the Red Bull Flugtag event, which is returning to Sydney after an eight-year hiatus.
The free November 10 event challenges design-savvy teams to create, build and pilot home-made flying machines off a six metre flight deck into Sydney Harbour.
Sustainability is key – with bamboo and cloth being prime materials used to achieve maximum lift to reach new heights.
A total of 40 teams will compete, including one from Kogarah and one from Rockdale.
The Kogarah team, the Millenial Falcon, consists of a group of young engineers and architects, and they will compete again team Rockdale, Aussie Spaceship 1.
Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German, pushes human-powered flight, but competitors need more than airtime to reach the podium.
Teams are judged on flight distance, creativity of the craft, and showmanship.
Since the first event was held in Vienna, Austria, in 1992, more than 150 Red Bull Flugtags have been held around the globe, attracting up to 300,000 spectators for a single event.
The event launches from Mrs Macquarie’s Chair.
