Fifty thousand dollars will go a long way in securing a new project that aims to support older women who are at risk of homelessness.
3Bridges received the $50,000 Community Sector Banking Social Investment Grant this month.
The community support service’s Care and Share project provides in-home care for disabled, frail or older people in Sydney in exchange for reduced rent.
It keeps women who are at risk of homelessness in accommodation and ensures disabled, frail or older people have access to support in their homes.
Chairman of the Social Investment Grants Committee, Bruce Argyle, said the grants, which began in 2014, were designed to strengthen Australian non-profit organisations and their communities.
“We were especially impressed by the level of innovation we saw from 3Bridges to support vulnerable groups and address homelessness in Sydney,” he said.
“Programs that address the root cause of social issues are key to helping strengthen our communities, and this innovative program does just that. It considers the future needs of women at-risk of homelessness and empowers them to improve their situations for good.”
Chief executive of 3Bridges Community, Rosemary Bishop, says the funding is beneficial.
“Many older people would like some additional support to live safely at home,” she said. “This program will enable older women to link with women seeking more secure accommodation.”
