It's taken eleven years for the mother of murdered Melbourne teen Liep Gony to speak out about her son's brutal death.
Hundreds gathered on the steps of the Victorian parliament on Wednesday to mark the anniversary of the day when the 18-year-old was bashed and left for dead by two Caucasian youths at a Noble Park train station in 2007.
Clinton David Rintoull and Dylan Giuseppe Sabatino were jailed for 20 and 10 years respectively for the crime.
"I hope what happened to Liep never happens to a young man again" his mother Martha Ojulo said through an interpreter at the memorial service on Wednesday.
The mother said she wanted an end to the way people spoke about African Australians and wanted politicians to change their language.
The family fled South Sudan after family members were tortured and spent years in a refugee camp before they arrived in Australia.
His cousin Nyawech Fouch collapsed during her speech, crying and screaming as she was comforted.
"This is still going to happen to another child, this is not over," Ms Fouch screamed.
She said afterwards thinking of cousin's racially motivated murder caused her to have a panic attack.
Ms Ojulo was at home when she got the call her injured son had been found at the train station and rushed to his aid, flanked by his brother, sister and cousin.
But despite getting her son to hospital, he died a day later.
