The Regals Musical Society’s latest musical Rock of Ages opens at Rockdale Town Hall on Friday.
Built around iconic rock songs of the 1980s including The Final Countdown, Hit Me With Your Best Shot and Don’t Stop Believin’, Rock of Ages follows young couple Drew Boley (Aaron Wilson) and Sherrie Christian (Courtney Josh) as they navigate life in Hollywood while Drew tries to become the next big rock star.
Peter Sharratt, president of the Regals Musical Society, said the show was a classic ‘80s throwback featuring big egos, big guitar solos and big hair.
“It's a cheesy, raucous romp through ‘80s America. It has a love story and a David/Goliath struggle to save Sunset Strip,” he said.
Sharratt, a long-time resident of Sutherland, will also perform in the production. He ll take on the role of the mayor. Both Wilson and Josh, as well as other cast members, are St George and Sutherland Shire performers.
Wilson, a year 11 student at Inaburra School, admitted he didn’t know many of the songs in Rock of Ages before auditioning for his role.
“Most of the ‘80s tunes are new to me. I wasn’t even born when they were originally released but the more I listen the more I’m loving them,” he said.
Wilson’s transformation into character was not an easy one, swapping his usual short hair and a school uniform for a wild, long-haired wig and a leather jacket. But he said it was the ambition and passion behind the character of Drew that he enjoyed the most.
“Although its all fun and games, Drew has his emotional moments where he empties his heart,” he said.
One of Wilson’s favourite songs to perform is Oh Sherrie, a duet with co-star Josh.
“This song pushes my vocal ability to the edge, giving it my all. I love this song and enjoy every moment of it, especially the last note,” he said.
The show is directed by Julian Batchelor, with musical direction from Amanda Jenkins and choreography by Shannon Hatchman.
While many people have been working hard on stage and behind-the-scenes, few have been as dedicated as the Morrison family.
Sisters Jenny Morrison (ensemble) and Julie Ryan (Justice Charlier) will perform together in the production. Their brother Paul Morrison is the treasurer of the Regals, as well as a life member alongside parents Cheryl and John, who will be in the box office. Paul’s children Jacob and Gabi Morrison made their on-stage debuts earlier this year, and will assist backstage in this production.
Shows will be performed on October 12, 13, 14, 17, 19 and 20.
Tickets are available online.
