A Peakhurst West Public School pupil has been recognised for his compassion, integrity and kindness at a ceremony for the Fred Hollows Humanity Award at Parliament House.
Zeyad Swade was nominated for helping people in need through volunteering each week at St John Ambulance.
Each year he also volunteers on Anzac Day and raises funds for the Red Shield Appeal.
Zeyad sponsors an orphan in the Middle East, delivers cooked meals and helps new migrants with reading and writing, as well as providing companionship.
The humanity award is a national initiative of The Fred Hollows Foundation that acknowledges year 6 pupils who follow in Fred’s footsteps by demonstrating humanitarian values.
NSW Education Minister, Rob Stokes and foundation director, Gabi Hollows, presented 79 students from across the state with their certificates.
Mr Stokes says the award recognises wonderful acts of generosity and kindness.
“We need more people like these students to make NSW and Australia a brighter place for everyone,” he said.
Gabi Hollows says the award highlights inspirational students making a positive difference in their communities.
“Fred would have been incredibly proud of the contribution these students are making to society and of the foundation for recognising and encouraging them to help others, no matter how big or small their actions,” she said.
