Students will get a healthy boost in their career prospects as preparations get underway for the construction of a new $4.2 million specialist training facility at TAFE NSW St George.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events and Assistant Minister for Skills, Adam Marshall, was on campus with Oatley MP Mark Coure on Wednesday, to inspect the site of the new state-of-the-art facility.
Mr Marshall says the new training centre will respond to considerable enrolment growth in areas including nursing.
“There is significant demand for more skilled health care workers in NSW, with projections showing our state will require an additional 10,000 individuals working in the sector by 2020,” he said.
“This new facility will allow TAFE NSW to provide more training to students in nursing, aged care and disability services, ensuring our economy and communities have the skilled workers they need.
“As Australia’s largest VET provider TAFE NSW has a key role to play in producing the workers of the future.”
In the past two years, TAFE NSW enrolments in nursing have increased by 16 per cent.
Mr Coure said the new facility is a huge win for students in St George.
“There is strong and growing demand in our region for health services training, especially after the significant development of St George Hospital,” Mr Coure said.
“This new facility will equip students with the hands-on skills employers here in St George and right across Sydney are calling for.”
The facility will include simulated work environments and classrooms, and will cater for about 500 students.
It will open in early 2019.
