When confidence trickster Victor Blake descends on his long suffering sister and brother-in- law after a spell in prison he finds that they have a guest — an attractive and wealthy widow.
He sees this as a solution to his financial problems and deploys his charm and trickery to ensnare her.
But one scheme founders after another until Victor finds himself in more trouble than he can handle.
Blake Beattie who plays Victor said it was the script that attracted him to False Pretences, the latest production by the Sutherland Theatre Company.
‘‘It is a very funny play with some great roles that looked like they would be a lot of fun playing.
‘‘Also, I have very fond memories of the last play I performed in at Sutherland Theatre Company – A Few Good Men which Scott Brawley was also in — 20 years ago.
‘‘I think the audience can expect to have a good laugh — and hopefully enjoy it as much as we will.’’
Scott Brawley who plays Kevin said False Pretences was a fabulous farce from the ever reliable Eric Chappell.
‘‘We have had successful seasons of several of his plays in the past including Haywire, Theft, Father’s Day, Natural Causes, Summer End and Only when I laugh,’’ Brawley said.
‘‘After focusing on writing and directing plays with Robert Stewart (who is also in the show) in recent years, I’m looking forward to returning to the stage for this fun bit of nonsense.’’
Directed by Chris Andrews, the Sutherland Theatre Company will present False Pretences from November 9 to 18 at the Sutherland Memorial School of Arts, 21-23 East Parade, Sutherland.
