Re the article “Cars ‘Binned in the Nasho’: Shire facebook page shames bad drivers” (Leader, October 31).
The number of accidents occurring in the Royal National Park are increasing alarmingly, mainly due to speeding.
I believe there are a couple of possible solutions to this problem.
Firstly, speed humps well marked and well signed to warn speeding road users that they are approaching a speed hump and secondly a bridge built to connect the township of Maianbar with Woolooware.
This would enable those folk who live at either Maianbar or Bundeena to access their homes without having to go through Audley – a notorious spot for flooding as well as a difficult place to negotiate with sharp bends at either approach.
Obviously there would be many people who would oppose such changes on the grounds that the national park is just that a national park for rest and recreation and not a roadway in the accepted sense or a built up area. But it is.
The two townships have been there for many years and over that time they have gradually grown.
The road through the national park has gradually become used as access to the south coast and indeed many users of that road would find it much more difficult to get to and from work if it were closed as it is from time to time.
It’s time to put aside thoughts of having a pristine national park and realise that the park is indeed part of greater Sydney area and that steps be taken to alleviate a worsening traffic situation before there is another fatality on this important road.
