1990s: In a scene which rekindled memories of the Granville rail disaster, carriages jack-knifed in terrifying fashion when two trains collided during an early morning shunting procedure at Waterfall station in 1994.
No passengers were aboard and four rail workers escaped with minor bruising.
2000s: The M5 East motorway was officially opened on December 9, 2001 after a major sign was hastily changed.
The sign directed west-bound traffic exiting at King Georges Road to turn right if they were heading for Hurstville and the south coast, and left for Homebush Bay and the northern beaches.

1960s: St George stars John King, Graeme Langlands, Reg Gasnier and John Raper are pictured together in 1966.
The latter three have since been chosen in the game’s elite group of “immortals”.
Gasnier, a St George junior from the Renown club, debuted in first grade in 1959 and in the same year, after just a handful of games, was selected to represent NSW and Australia.
Raper joined St George from Newtown in 1959 while King joined Saints from Gilgandra, via Arncliffe Scots, after being rejected by Souths as too small.
Langlands, from Wollongong, was signed by St George after representing Country in their 18-8 defeat of City in 1962.
1970s: Excavation started in 1979 for a major expansion of Sutherland Hospital, which had seen little change since its opening in 1958.
The $20 million project, which was finalised in 1984, included a 30-bed children's ward, 30-bed psychiatric ward, new operating theatres and a variety of new departments, including physiotherapy, radiography and social work.
1980s: Lara Garling, of Kirrawee, was crowned Miss Boat Show 1989 at the Leader’s fourth annual Boat Show at Caltex Field, Woolooware.
The show attracted 15,000 visitors, including solo, round-the-world sailor and 1989 Australian of the Year Kay Cottee.
