The world’s faster swimmer Michael Wenden swam in front of about 2000 spectators at the opening of the Caringbah Olympic pool 50 years ago this month.
Costing $33,000, the pool was opened on November 30, 1968, less than a year after the shire’s first Olympic pool began operating at Sutherland.
A Leader photo shows spectators packed around the pool as Wenden dived in to swim a lap of honour.
Two months earlier, he had broken the 100 metres world record and 200 metres Olympic record in winning two gold medals, along with a silver and bronze, at the Mexico Olympics.
It was the best individual performance since the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 and Wenden was up against American superstars Mark Spitz and Don Schollander.
No special celebration has been organised for the 50 years anniversary of what is now called the Caringbah Leisure Centre.
However, two “Sunday Funday” events, organised by Sutherland Shire Council, will have extra significance, and there will be a display of historical photos on the second Sunday.
The fun days, on November 18 and 25, provide activities for children, including face painting, lucky door prizes, a giant water inflatable, sausage sizzle and refreshments.
Caringbah pool has been used for training by many big names during its lifetime, including marathon champion Susie Maroney.
Regular swimmers include Georgene McKenzie-Hicks, OAM, 91, who swims four kilometres a week, and has done so for many years.
It is also home to Cronulla Swim Club, which moved from Gunnamatta Bay baths to the better facilities after the 1968 opening.
In recent years, Sutherland Shire Council has looked at options for redeveloping the ageing leisure centre, but no firm proposal has yet emerged.
