A suspected drug driver was lucky to survive a spectacular late night crash near Arncliffe on Tuesday night.
His high speed demolition caught on security camera footage before the man lashed out at paramedics forcing him be restrained by police.
The man’s red hatchback Kia can be seen travelling along the Princes Highway at high speed around midnight before it clips a medium strip severing a traffic light pole and exploding into a cloud of debris.
The car then spins along the highway on its roof for almost 100m before clipping a parked 4WD which helps right the vehicle as it comes to rest.
Onlookers, including security staff from the Banksia Hotel and staff and patrons from Brothers Kebabs, can then be seen running to the still conscious driver’s assistance.
The driver, a 31-year-old Marrickville man, escaped with barely a scratch but became angry as he was taken to an ambulance to be treated by paramedics.
The man turned on the paramedics forcing police to restrain him. He was later taken to St George Hospital where he remained under police guard on Wednesday.
“We were lucky NSW police were on scene they were able to assist our NSW paramedics to keep them safe and the patient safe,” said Acting Superintendent Stephen Vaughan, Ambulance NSW.
Chief Inspector Phillip Brooks from NSW Police said it was lucky no one was seriously injured in the crash.
“This crash could quite easily have impacted not only on this man but also other road users,” Inspector Brooks said.
“When this man was searched police recovered an amount of cannabis and methamphetamine.
“When this person is release from hospital we’ll look to interview him and charge this driver with a range of serious traffic and drugs charges.”
