Marist Catholic College Penhurst has turned over a new leaf.
The school marked some green beginnings with a tree planting ceremony at the school’s new South Hurstville campus.
It symbolised the start of building works, which are due to be completed and ready for students by 2020.
The new site is being constructed as a middle school for year 7 and 8 students, and will enable an increase in total enrolments over both campuses.
The college has already experienced considerable growth since it began offering HSC courses and became co-educational four years ago.
Principal Ray Martin is excited to guide the school as it evolves.
“Our vision for learning places a strong emphasis on academic achievement and seeking constant improvement in a safe and supportive learning environment,” he said
“Being a dual campus college will allow this vision to be further realised, as the younger students will have more opportunities as they transition from primary school to high school.”
Oatley MP and former student of the school, Mark Coure, says an existing heritage listed building will remain.
“...And we’ll see a site here that will blend in both history and newer playgrounds and buildings that will equip students for the future,” he said.
Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools Dan White says the project is an investment for the future.
“I feel very privileged that we’re taking on a heritage of building something for this community,” he said.
