He is known as Australia’s favourite maths teacher – and this week, Eddie Woo shared his knowledge and passion for numbers with students of Sutherland Shire.
The multi-award winning educator hosted “Wootube” at Sutherland Library, a free booked-out event that encouraged children to get excited about maths.
Mr Woo also signed copies of his new book, Woo’s Wonderful World of Maths.
With a YouTube following of more than 411,000 subscribers and 22 million views, Mr Woo has been featured on ABC’s Australian Story and at TEDx Sydney.
He won this year’s Australian Local Hero of the Year and was named among the world’s top 10 teachers.
Mr Woo teaches mathematics at Cherrybrook High School.
“I love having the opportunity to take something that often makes people anxious – mathematics, and show them a different side to the subject that they can not only understand and appreciate, but even enjoy,” he said.
Students Liam Van Ravenstein and Tess Jordan were excited to hear Eddie speak.
“I found Eddie’s talk inspiring, I felt his passion for maths was infectious,” Tess said.
“Eddie’s talk was very interesting and made you realise the presence of mathematics in the world,” Liam said.
Sutherland Mayor Councillor Carmelo Pesce says it was a thrilling opportunity for students in the shire to meet such an inspiring teacher.
“Eddie Woo has brought such enthusiasm to the world of teaching,” Mr Pesce said.
“It’s great for students to interact with someone who is so passionate about what they do and I’m sure everyone who attended has walked away with a new perspective on learning.
“Eddie does such a great job getting people to feel excited about maths, and learning in general.”
