Miranda artist Joel “Mulga” Moore continues his extravant colour streak projects across Sutherland Shire – this time it was an invitation to paint with a personal connection attached.
The artist was asked by a parent to give the canteen a fresh makeoever at Caringbah North Public School.
It also happens to be Mulga’s former primary school.
“I was last there over 25 years ago,” he said. “The canteen was originally a bland green colour, which the rest of the school is painted with.
“I painted the canteen in really bright colours, covering it in funky fruit characters with moustaches – for which I am well known for.”
Of course it was not an individual assignment – 12 pupils from the school rolled up their sleeves and dipped their paintbrushes into buckets alongside Mulga.
“They are in year 5 and are the future leadership team who will be the prefects of the school,” Mulga said.
Mulga is no stranger to school projects. He also recently wrapped up a mural at Kirrawee High School.
It was a parting gift from year 12 to the school, and its class of 2018 pitched in with the artist to create a cockatoo, representing acceptance of diversity and equality. There are also many cockatoos on school grounds.
The logo of each charitable organisation students supported is also incorporated, including Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Headspace, and Starlight Foundation, in honour of a former student who died of cancer.
The artist, who splashes his project across Instagram, also has a pop-up shop at Westfield Miranda on level 3. It will be there until the last day of 2018.
“It’s the fifth time I've opened a pop-up shop there,” he said.
“It’s the perfect place for shire folks to get unique and useful presents by a local artist dude.”
