St George Girls High School, Sydney Technical High School and Caringbah High School are again all in the ‘top NSW HSC schools’ for 2018.
St George Girls at Kogarah ranked 19 – a step up from its 2017 ranking of 24. Sydney Tech also improved on its ranking, climbing to 24th position from last year’s 29th.
Caringbah High School, a selective co-educational school, dropped just by one rank to 40th position from 39th last year.
In addition to the first in course awards, the NSW Education Standards Authority also released its Top Achievers in Course lists.
These are the students who achieved one of the highest places in an HSC course or VET exam and also achieved a result in the highest band possible (Band 6 or Band E4).
Girls tipped the boys across the board, many excelling in languages.
“Overall all our language results were well above state average,” Open High School co-ordinator at Blakehurst High, Roula Evangelinos, said. “Of the 54 students who studied a language, 16 received a band 6 and 29 received a band 5.”
Public schools in St George including Blakehurst, Beverly Hills Girls, Kingsgrove North, and St George Girls and Sydney Tech high schools had students on the list. Students from the Catholic sector including Bethany College, Marist College Kogarah and Penshurst, St Ursula’s College and St George Christian School were also listed.
In Sutherland Shire, students from Inaburra, and Caringbah, Engadine, Menai and Woolooware high schools were among the ‘top achievers’. Students from Aquinas, St John Bosco College, St Patrick’s College Sutherland also made up the Catholic school top achievers across a variety of subjects.
But school ranks do not reflect whole student performance, principal of Kogarah High School, Julie Ross, said.
She says it is important to acknowledge that ranking is only one measure of success of the school.
“Kogarah High School is very pleased to have moved up 24 places in the ranking, however, this does not show the true growth,” she said.
“Building the number of students studying for the HSC – from 96 in 2017 to 118 in 2018, is an important measure.”
Mrs Ross says that while many students may not achieve a band 6, their participation in formal learning and ongoing commitment to improvement is key.
“Increasing the length of time students are in formal education is very important for their future success, whether that be further study or employment,” she said.
“I'm really pleased with the breadth of curriculum we have been able to offer to keep our young people engaged in learning; everything from construction to economics, from drama to engineering. This is the measure of success of our school.”
